Homeland:
Believed to be saxony and originated about 1750.
Breed
Characteristics:
Head: Dove like in appearance in smooth headed,
wider at the back of the skull for those with shell
crest. Crest is positioned high on the head, rounded,
full, and terminates in well defined rosettes on both
sides. Main is unbroken from crest down to the back of
neck. EYES: Bull (dark), ceres small, flesh colored to
reddish.
Beak:
Long and slightly bowed at the point. Wattle is only
slightly developed, smooth, and fine in texture. Lower
mandible flesh colored in all colors. Upper mandible is
black in blacks, black to dark colored in blues, and
flesh colored in reds and yellows.
Neck:
Medium length to moderately short and slightly arched,
full where neck joins the body and appearing bull necked
on crested variety. Throat rounded out.
Breast: Broad, deep and rounded, somewhat
protruding.
Back: Fairly long, broad and slightly sloping to
the tail.
Wings: Powerful, well feathered, held tightly
against the body with wing tips slightly touching while
riding above the tail.
Tail: Moderately short, tightly closed and held
above the ground.
Legs and Feet: Legs short, on clean legged red,
with no hock feathers. Muffed variety, hock feathers are
full, foot feathers heavily muffed having a sickle like
appearance with no breaks in the sickle. The sickle
shape is of more importance than the length of muffs,
however, the longer the better.
Plumage:
Tight feathered with rich colors in black, red and
yellow, with good sheen. Blues should be soft and evenly
shaded.
Color Patterns: The stork is bred in black,
blue, red and yellow.
Specific Markings:
Head: All Storks have a spot marking on the
head. Ideally the size of the spot is the size of the
little finger nail, but variation is permitted as long
as the spot is symmetrical. However, color cannot run to
the eye ceres. The spot originates at the base of the
upper mandible above the wattle.
Wings: To obtain the desired "Blueme" or triangle
pattern on the wing buff, the Stork must have 10 primary
flight feathers colored along with 4 secondary flights
for a total of 14 colored flights. A straight line is
drawn from the last colored flight across the wing to
base of the thumb feathers (or Bastard Pinions). All
outward feathers are colored and all inward feathere are
white, this gives the desired marking for the Saxon
Stork.
Feet: Hock feathers are white and full, the foot
feathers are colored and have a sickle (rounded) shape.
Foot feathers should be full, the longer the better as
long as the sickle shape is maintained. Sickle shape
takes precedence over length of feather.
Color:
All colored areas of the bird shall be of a rich even
shade. White areas shall be pure white.
