Size and Shape (20 pts.):
The American Roller is to be a bird of medium size approximately 8 to 12 ounces. Larger birds are not desired and should be disqualified. Body to be gracefully proportioned showing good width of chest and tapering to the tail. Keel should extend well back. The keel should also show some depth, as shallow keeled birds are undesirable. Birds are to be short and cobby.

Head (10 pts.): The head should have a graceful continuously curving oval skull, not round. The head should also be free of any flat areas. The head should be powerful, but not so large as to be out of proportion with the rest of the bird. The huge oversized bull head is undesirable. The head also should not be pinched.

Beak (5 pts.): All birds must have a flesh colored beak of medium size. Wattles to be a fine white texture, not too exaggerated

Eyes (5 pts.): American Rollers must have pearl eyes only. All other types of eyes are to be a disqualification. The pupil should be centered in the middle of the eye. The eye to be encircled by a fine white eye cere.

Neck (10 pts.): Neck is to be medium in length. Good and stout at the shoulders tapering gradually to the head.

Legs and Feet (5 pts.): All birds must be clean legged. Groused or feather legged birds are to be disqualified. Legs to be short but not so short that the bird appears to squat. Legs are to be straight. Toenails are to be flesh colored.

Tail (10 pts.): The tail should be tight and close in formation. Twelve tail feathers only. There should not be any gaps when spread, but when closed be as close to one tail feather wide as possible.

Flights and Cover (10 pts.): Flights should be strong and broad. When the wing is extended there should be no gaps. Wing tips should reach to within ¾ of an inch of the end of the tail. Wings must be carried above the tail, not below. The secondary flights should be long and strong to cover the back, avoiding the sideboarded look.

Stance (15 pts.): The bird should stand straight and erect with a full chest. Birds should stand upright on straight legs between 35 - 45 degrees. Squatting or crouching is undesirable.

Colors (15 pts.): All colors shall be rich and lustrous looking, showing no off colored or smutty feathers. Birds should also be firm of body and feather. Color points are not affected by markings.

RED: Color to be as deep as shade of chestnut red as possible. A lighter shade is acceptable, but must be even and free of smut. The darker, the better.
YELLOW: A deep, even, golden, buff yellow preferred. Free of smut.
